I agree with stretching before and after workouts. I am on the cross-country team here and we spend lots of time on stretching. It is important to warm up your muscles before stretching so you will not pull anything. Warm muscles also provide for a full range of muscles, so before we stretch we jog slowly for about 15 minutes. After our workouts our coach encourages us to stretch the same amount as before our run. Your muscles are very warm after a workout, so this is the greatest time to enhance your flexibility.
I also agree that stretching is a key component to do before any kind of physical activity. And also agree that people should stretch before and after a sports game or physical activity. I know when I play pick up games with friends it’s always the kids that don’t stretch that end up getting hurt and are always complaining about soreness and their body aching. It is also amazing that just stretching every day or at least 3-5 times a week can help out with everyday activities and can also relieve stress; I think that more people need to stretch then.
I always make time after my workouts to stretch. If I don't stretch after my workouts I will be really tight the next day and usually have a few knots in it too.
Like Kerry I agree with stretching and we do spend tons and tons of time on warming up and stretching during cross country and even track. We do a 15 minute warm up and stretch for at least 20 minutes. I once heard long distance runners don't need to stretch because it doesn't help the elasticity of your muscles with our sport. I disagree because stretching helps you feel loose and ready to go, also it really prevents injuries.
